We have learned a lot from
our first shipment. One of the most important lessons involved the boxing and
labeling of donations. If not done properly, boxes split open when others
boxes are placed on top. Also, unless properly labeled boxes must be opened
and examined to determine content and/or grade level. Below are some boxing
guidelines:
1.
Boxes should not
be too large. When full, large boxes are too heavy to lift. A good size for
books is 12X12X15. Boxes of stuff animals, clothing or lighter materials can
be a little larger.
2.
Boxes must be
completely filled. Each box should be like a brick.
If boxes are not filled to the top, they will split open in transit. Items
such as tennis balls, stuffed animals and small children’s books should be
used to fill voids.
3.
All boxes
should be labeled. If possible boxes should have uniform
items. If a box has T-shirts, write how many T-shirts. If a box has textbooks,
the label should include subject, title, grade level and the number of books
inside. If the box is for a sister school, your school’s name and the sister
school’s name should be on the box.
4.
Boxes should
be taped closed. Try to use reliable tape since
unreliable tape tends to separate or stick to other boxes.
5.
Boxing labels
should be provided to your school by USACF
6.
When lifting
heavy boxes, please lift from the knees.
